The Women's Championship in England is set to undergo a major rebranding, becoming the Women's Super League 2 (WSL2) from the 2025-26 season. This change is part of an extensive restructuring of women's professional football in the country. Announced by Women's Professional Leagues Limited (WPLL), which manages the top two divisions in women's football, the rebranding includes new names, emblems, and a visual identity aimed at unifying the leagues under a single umbrella.
Furthermore, WPLL will be rebranded as Women's Super League Football (WSL Football) immediately. The top division will continue to be called the Women's Super League (WSL). This initiative marks the first significant change implemented by WSL Football since taking over the two top tiers from the Football Association in August 2024. The new branding draws inspiration from the dynamics of female footballers, incorporating "living emblems," color systems, and league and company word marks based on on-pitch movements.
Ruth Hooper, the chief marketing officer of WSL Football, expressed excitement about the future growth of women's football, indicating that more developments are expected in the coming months.
In other recent developments within the league, Chelsea concluded the Women's Super League as champions for the sixth consecutive season, while Crystal Palace faced relegation to the second tier. Additionally, the London City Lionesses made history earlier this month by becoming the first fully independent women's club, not affiliated with a men's team, to achieve promotion to the WSL.
This rebranding and restructuring aim to enhance the visibility and professionalism of women's football in England, providing a unified and dynamic platform for the sport's growth.
